I over shot by birthday deadline by about 10 days, but my 40 before 40 bucket list is officially complete! It was an amazing year filled with fun and excitement. My favorite part was sharing experiences with friends and family. It was an extraordinary year, but just because the list is complete doesn’t mean the adventure is over. My 39th year was fabulous, but I expect my 40th to be even more thrilling.
There is joy in sharing experiences with others, but there is also something magical about going it alone. Experiences had while solo are like having a secret all to yourself. There’s something powerful in that.

This little soldier has been keeping watch over the soap dispenser in my bathroom for years. Not a soul passes without a thorough hand washing. My husband brought him back from a work trip to China a few years ago as he knows how fascinated I am with the story behind the Terracotta Army.
When traveling, sometimes things just don’t work out the way you plan. When I added “sleeping in a capsule hotel” to my 40 before 40 bucket list, I envisioned super modern pods that would be akin to sleeping in a space station. I imagined Rosie from the Jetsons delivering room service and a pod equipped with a Death Star control panel just incase I wanted to wage war with my pod mates.
I’m a sucker for unique and adventurous places to stay. If you have read my post, Will Travel for Treehouses & Other Strange Sleeping Arrangements or had a conversation about travel with me, this comes as no surprise. I’ll trade a cushy bed for a unique experience any opportunity I get. So, of course, a few non-traditional places to call home for the night landed on my 40 Before 40 Bucket List.

I’ll admit it. Jumping into a hole cut into a frozen lake was probably the item I looked forward to the least on my 40 Before 40 Bucket List. It went on and off the draft several times. I finally committed when I found out about a Polar Plunge event hosted by Law Enforcement to raise money for Special Olympics Minnesota. Now that’s a good reason to jump in a lake!
The first time I saw photos of the Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas I knew I had to visit. The café tables lining the water’s edge looked so inviting. My first thought was, ‘now, wouldn’t that be the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee.’ Thus “having a cup of coffee along the San Antonio Riverwalk” became one of my 40 Before 40 Bucket List items.
Winter Olympics 2022, here I come! Yeah, right. But, I did get to check a second item off my bucket list and try something new. Curling was a fun experience. Anyone can pick up the basics quickly. I thought our instructor summed it up well when he said “curling takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master.”

The first time we attempted to ice climb at Robinson Park in Sandstone, Minnesota, it was an unbearable -14 degrees Fahrenheit. My breath was freezing to my hair, and icicles were forming on our eyelashes. We had to throw in the towel and reschedule.
I did it! I checked off my first “40 Before 40” Bucket List item! I have the scars (okay, bruises) to prove it, but I’ll get to that later.
I’m kicking off my 40 Before 40 Bucket List with a literal splash! On February 24th, I’ll be doing a Polar Plunge at Crooked Lake in Coon Rapids, Minnesota.

It’s happening. I’ve denied it. I’ve ignored it. I’ve tried to go the other direction. But, it’s happening. I am turning 40 exactly one year and one month from today. Cue the violins.
I am Susan Taylor, hence the “Taylor” in Taylored Adventures. I am a wife and mother who loves to travel. In fact, I am a wife and mother because of travel! I have visited 35+ countries, but I believe that adventure can be found across the globe or your own backyard.
