If you follow my blog, you know that I’ve been feverishly checking items off my 40 before 40 bucket list. The list of adventures I plan to complete in the next year are no cakewalk. Or, so I thought until I hiked the “The Plank Walk in the Sky” at Mount Hua, China.
I had never heard of this infamous path dubbed “The World’s Most Dangerous Hike” or “The World’s Deadliest Hike” until a few weeks prior to a trip to China. A video of the plank walk popped up on my Facebook feed. As I watched mesmerized, I realized I was holding my breath. I couldn’t get enough. I watched several more videos with one eye closed and read the rumors that 100 people plunge to their death each year making the trek. I was hooked. I HAD TO EXPERIENCE THIS FOR MYSELF.
The city of Xi’an was already on our China itinerary. Mount Hua is only 75 miles east of Xi’an. “It should be easy to get there,” I thought. I did some online research to find the best route, but I couldn’t find specific directions. We decided to just wing it.
As it so often does with travel, it worked out. We found our way, but I figured out why I could not find directions online. It’s complicated! In the hopes of helping fellow adventures find their way to the plank, I put together the below step-by-step guide.
I told you it’s complicated!
Here are a couple more helpful resources to help you along the way:
- Click HERE to find train schedules and fares from Xi’an to Huashan.
- Click HERE for a map of Huashan’s peaks and cable car locations.
Once you make it to the mountain, the views are nothing short of amazing! It is definitely a case of “a picture is worth a thousand words”. Check out our video and see for yourself. It’s okay if you have to watch it with one eye closed. That’s how I had to walk it!
