Having Coffee Along the San Antonio Riverwalk

The first time I saw photos of the Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas I knew I had to visit.  The café tables lining the water’s edge looked so inviting.  My first thought was, ‘now, wouldn’t that be the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee.’  Thus “having a cup of coffee along the San Antonio Riverwalk” became one of my 40 Before 40 Bucket List items.

I then had to decide with whom I wanted to share this cup of joe.  The answer came quickly- my besties of course! I have three girlfriends I have been traveling with for years…Karen Carroll, Karen Kartman and April Lee.  Oh, the stories we have!  But that’s a different story(s) for a different day;).  And, yes, it sometimes gets confusing that there are two Karens in the group.  We just call them K-squared. Unfortunately, Karen (Kartman) could not make the trip, but she was there in spirit.

Since this post is about my bucket list item of “having a cup of coffee along the San Antonio Riverwalk”, I’ll get on with it and stick to topic, but there is so much fun to be had in San Antonio.  You can expect another post on things to do in this beautiful city soon.

So, about that coffee…

What was the activity?

Having coffee along the San Antonio Riverwalk.  I figured I would spice it up and try an iced Mexican coffee.

Who participated?

Two of my best friends…Karen Carroll and April Lee.  We have had many travel adventures together over the years starting way back in high school.

The three amigos at high school graduation.

Our first trip together- high school graduation cruise to Mexico, Jamaica and The Grand Caymans.

#11 on my 40 Before 40 Bucket List

3rd item completed

Where was it completed?

Rio Rio Cantina Fresh Tex-Mex along the San Antonio Riverwalk.

Why did I choose to put this item on my bucket list?

When I was putting together my 40 Before 40 List, I came across pictures of the San Antonio Riverwalk and knew I wanted to visit.  I thought why not combine two of my favorite things…travel and coffee.

How did I find out about this activity? How would one go about making arrangements to do this activity?

I found out about the San Antonio Riverwalk while scrolling through travel pictures on Pinterest.  The same day I was looking for a girls’ trip destination.  I found incredibly cheap plane tickets ($86/rt) from Atlanta to San Antonio and decided it was destiny.  I added the coffee part because sipping on a cup of joe at one of the cafes I saw in the pictures seemed like a great way to spend a morning.

If Frontier flies out of your home base airport, plan your trip to San Antonio now!  I frequently see inexpensive flights to San Antonio from many different cities in their “sale” emails.  You can sign up here to receive Frontier emails with information specific to the airport you specify.  Just make sure to take a peek at my packing light post to avoid racking up extra charges.

I’ll be posting another article about our trip with additional information on things to do in San Antonio…stay tuned!

Interesting tidbits:

  • Having now visited San Antonio, coffee along the river was probably not the best choice. We couldn’t find a coffee shop along the Riverwalk, and it was actually kind of difficult to find a restaurant open for breakfast.  Having guacamole along the Riverwalk should have been the goal….which we also accomplished.  We had great guac at several restaurants.  The guacamole made table side at Boudro’s is not to be missed!
  • If you are interested in trying iced Mexican coffee, here’s a recipe I’ve concocted in an attempt to replicate the coffee I had along the river.  It’s pretty yummy, if I do say so myself!

1 shot of espresso
1 dash ground cinnamon
1 dash ground cloves
Vanilla coffee creamer to taste
1 cup milk
1 glass filled with ice

Mix all ingredients on list besides milk and ice in espresso.  Pour espresso mixture and milk over ice.  Stir.  Enjoy!

Bucket List Rating:

1 bucket.  As you might have guessed, drinking coffee in a picturesque setting is not difficult task.
